The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, known in Chinese as Dàyàn Tǎ, was originally built in 652 AD during the Tang Dynasty. It was commissioned by Emperor Gaozong to house the Buddhist scriptures and relics brought back from India by the monk Xuanzang after his legendary seventeen-year journey along the Silk Road. Standing in the grounds of the Da Ci'en Temple in Xi'an, the pagoda was initially five storeys tall and was later rebuilt and expanded to its current seven-storey form. It is one of the finest surviving examples of Tang Dynasty architecture, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of China's rich cultural exchange with the wider Buddhist world. Today it remains one of Xi'an's most visited landmarks, drawing millions of tourists every year to admire its distinctive square-tiered silhouette and the fountains that surround its base.
